How We Met

Wisconsin Sheltie Rescue has placed over 300 dogs into forever homes. There is a story behind each of these, that can't be told on the pages of the "Success Stories", due to space limitations. Each month, we will feature a different WSR sheltie and their story, as told by their forever family members.

Here's Sammi's Story, as told by her mom, Linda.

(Linda also created this beautiful photo spread)

Once upon a time we went looking for a princess pup. We searched high and low and we just couldn’t find the right one for our home. We searched hourly, daily, weekly and monthly. We couldn’t have just any pup we needed to find the perfect pup. She really would have some big paws to fill. Our last pup, Scruffy, was the most special pup in the world & she got cancer. When she was diagnosed she was only given 6 weeks to live. We took her to another vet and they confirmed what the first vet told us. We were devastated by the news. She was only 4 years old. She was absolutely delightful and the love of our lives.

However, we are dog people and we know every pup needs a special home and our home always needs a special pup. One day while we were out checking the local pounds (we love pound puppies), we stopped at the local Kopps Custard stand in Brookfield. While we were there we saw some people who were sitting on the grass with some adorable little shelties. We stopped to chat. One of the dogs only had 3 legs and was also having a problem swallowing food. The dogs were so sweet. While talking to the owners of the dogs, we learned that they got their dogs from Wisconsin Sheltie Rescue. They told us how to find the WSR web site.

When we got home, my husband immediately logged on to the WSR site and checked out all the dogs. He told me I had to see how many dogs needed a good home. After looking for awhile, he spotted a dog that had some of the same features as our last dog. We were looking for a special pup who would welcome lots of attention, and love to be a princess.

We finally made the arrangements to check her out. On the way to Chilton, our car overheated and we had to stop at a wayside gas station. We debated about continuing and decided the car would be OK. We pulled into Lisa’s driveway and did what everyone else does: We drove around the kennel to see if “she” was there. All the dogs started barking at the same time. When we stepped out of the car, Lisa was there to greet us. We introduced ourselves and said we came to meet Sammi. When we walked in, there were numerous dogs roaming around the house and Sammi was one of them. She was very shy but walked up to us and wanted to give us some kisses. She was a 2-year old female, sheltie mix that Lisa had gotten from the Collie Rescue. We took her for a short walk and she was very sweet. By the time we were ready to leave, we told Lisa we would like to adopt Sammi. We were disappointed we would have to wait a whole week for a home check before we could have her.

A week later Lisa brought Sammi to our house. We were delighted. We were dog sitting for a friend at the time and Sammi didn’t seem to mind being around other dogs. In fact she loved it. We were pleased about that because we occasionally dog sit. It didn’t take long before Sammi fit right in. Under Sammi’s picture on the web site, Lisa had printed, “She is adorable”. We have to admit, she is

Little by little, day by day, week by week, Sammi seemed more and more comfortable being here. Sammi loves playing with toys, and loves getting lots of pets, hugs & belly rubs from us. She also likes to take naps with whoever is taking a nap. Sammi has so many wonderful qualities. She has such a sweet disposition and is a princess pup in our house. (Please don’t tell her she’s a dog, she doesn’t know it.) I love having the privilege of being “Sammi’s mom”. We have had Sammi for 2 years. We hope you are all as blessed as we are. Life is too short not to have a dog who gives so much unconditional love.
