Each
year, many shelties are adopted out by shelters to inexperienced sheltie
homes. In many cases, the homes then surrender the sheltie to a rescue
instead of returning it to the shelter. The dog is bounced around yet
again.
This is
why I always contact shelters in order to pay their full adoption
fee and get the dog out of the shelter and into a PERMANENT home quickly
and effectively.
The following are
just some of the shelters who have partnered with WSR recently in order
to find homes for shelties:
Sheboygan County
Humane Society in Sheboygan, WI
Fond Du Lac Humane Society, Fond Du Lac, WI
Monroe County Animal Control, Tomah, WI
Dane
County Humane Society, Madison, WI
Wolf River Vet Clinic, New London, WI (this clinic serves as the area pound)
Southwoods Humane Society, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
Oshkosh Humane Society, Oshkosh, WI
Coulee Region, Onalaska, WI
Adams County Humane Society, WI
However, not all shelters work with breed rescue organizations. The following shelters
are not rescue friendly
and do not use Wisconsin Sheltie Rescue as a direct resource:
Green Lake Area Animal Shelter in Green Lake, WI
Fox Valley Humane Association in Appleton, WI
Humane Society of Waupaca County
Clark County Humane Society in Nellsville, WI
Humane Society of Jefferson
County, Jefferson, WI
Dunn County Humane Society, Menomonie, WI
Sauk County Humane Society, Baraboo, WI
Marathon County Humane Society - recently allowed us to take an 8 year old sheltie
who was not doing well at the shelter. They did not call us. We called them.
They had another sheltie since then and did NOT allow us to rescue her.
Lakeshore Humane Society in Manitowoc, WI - This is a shelter that I gave a $100
donation to the last time I went through Manitowoc and found a stray on the way.
I felt bad taking it to the shelter so I left them a check for $!00. Lately,
they had a sheltie mix there that they adopted out to a home that didn't understand
herding breeds and of course he was returned the next day. I have offered to
pay his adoption fee to get him and they refuse..
The Twig Project, Madison area, WI - an allbreed rescue that refused our
request to pay a sheltie's expenses and get him into an experienced rescue program.
A word about
MADAC (Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control):
MADAC gets all of the area strays and each day, a different Milwaukee
area shelter comes in and 'cherry picks' the dogs that they want, leaving
the ones that they don't. At that time, MADACC is allowed to call rescues
to take the leftovers.
